How did it go?

Q There’s so much publicity about the benefits of fish oils at the moment. Is it all hype?

A No, many experts now believe that the balance of Omega 6 (found in plant oils) and Omega 3 fatty acids in children’s diets may be crucial for health. The bulk of children’s polyunsaturated fat intake currently comes in the form of Omega 6s – so many experts believe it’s the level of Omega 3s, found in oily fish like mackerel and salmon, that needs to be improved. Children who have taken part in trials of fish oil supplements appear to have better concentration, learning ability and behaviour – but more research is needed. Eating oily fish regularly can help to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Try to put oily fish on the menu once or a maximum of twice a week from the age of nine months.

Q If a food contains these scary-sounding trans fats, do they have to be mentioned in the ingredients and the nutritional information on the label?

A No. However, trans fats can be formed during the process of hydrogenation, which means that some foods that contain hydrogenated vegetable oil also contain trans fats. Hydrogenated vegetable oil must be declared in the ingredients list. If the ingredients list includes hydrogenated vegetable oil, there’s likely to be trans fats in the product.

Here’s an idea for you

To keep an eye on how much fat your family is eating, compare the labels of different food products and choose those with less total fat and less saturated fat. Use the following as a guide:

20g fat or more per 100g is a LOT of fat

5g saturates or more per 100g is a LOT

3g fat or less per 100g is a LITTLE fat

1g saturates or less per 100g is a LITTLE fat

If the amount of total fat is between 3g and 20g per 100g, this is a MODERATE amount of total fat. Between 1g and 5g of saturates is a MODERATE amount of saturated fat.
